The Wicker Man
(1973) ***1/2
Back in 1973, this movie was described as a melodrama, then a musical. Today it is described as a horror/mystery/thriller. Much superior to its remake, it contains plenty of nudity and songs! It contains some of the best actors of that decade, them being in their prime..Christopher Lee, Edward Woodward, Diane Cilento, and Britt Ekland. The acting is great for the time, but is a little comical to me, especially the bartender. It is such a great movie, but remember there is quite a bit of singing. :)
Edward Woodward plays Sargent Howie who receives a letter in his mailbox at the police station of notice of a missing girl on the island called Summerisle. He comes across many strange people and their strange rituals. He finds out that he needs Lord Summerisle's(Christopher Lee) permission to investigate thoroughly after being met with resistance from the locals. As he travels around the island he sees the rituals of the Maypole, naked girls dancing and jumping over a fire, and sees the teachings of the phallic symbol in the classroom. He finds out from the teacher and Lord Summerisle, that Christianity does not exist on this island and they teach of reincarnation and fertility. Sgt Howie, still searching with confusion, comes to meet the wicker man!Willow is singing to Sgt. Howie to come make love to her...he has a hard time refusing!
Not the real actress's tushie. She was pregnant during the making of the film, and she didn't like showing her backside.Beware the burning bushes! Fertility ritual for the god of fire to bless their wombs.Mayday parade...where the furries were born.
