The Japanese car and motorcycle maker Suzuki has revealed details of its 2012 flagship Superbike – the GSX-R1000. The company upgraded both the engine and chassis in an effort to give it more performance on the road.

The changes are significant, however, and include new radial-mount Brembo Mono-bloc front brake calipers, a switch back to a single muffler system, and engine refinements that slightly bump compression and reduce inertia.
For 2012, the 999cc engine receives new MotoGP -derived pistons said to be 11% lighter than the previous version. As a result, the bike’s compression ratio climbs slightly from 12.8:1 to 12.9:1.
A different exhaust cam is claimed to add more mid-range power, something the big GSX-R was already never short of compared to its contemporaries.
Less weight, particularly at the back of the bike thanks to the single can, improves handling, too. Apparently.

“this new GSX-R model reflects decades of development through on-track domination around the world and the latest model continues the GSX-R1000’s legacy of championship-winning performance by integrating race-developed technology into our class-leading products.”

The current GSX-R1000 is a proven track performer (missing the British Superbike title by only 0.006sec) and current holder of the Brands Hatch Superbike lap record.
